Nutritional Therapy

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Food therapy is the oldest known form of medicine. Ancient texts of India (the Vedas) dating back to 4500 BC gave precise descriptions of the therapeutic and medicinal value of hundreds of foods and edible plants. In 400 BC, Hippocrates told his students “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food”. The Neijing, a Chinese text dating from 300 BC, states, “Medicine and food are of the same source”. All ancient cultures held similar beliefs.

Scholars and historians have shown these ancient cultures provided the foundation for much of contemporary western medicine. Unfortunately, their medicinal knowledge of food did not. This wisdom has mostly been lost to modern cultures. What we eat is no longer used to achieve healing and wellness. Food has become a simple commodity and popular diets are passing fads.

Food is the foundation of health and healing, yet most physicians don’t have the time, expertise, or resources to design patient-specific therapeutic diets. Patients are bio-chemically unique; therefore each requires an individualized diet. Current nutritional software programs are cumbersome for the patient and the practitioner.

Patient compliance is poor because the diets are hard to follow and often cause new problems while attempting to address existing ones.

Guide to Fight Cravings While on a Diet

Friday, April 9th, 2010

One of the huge problems with a diet is that you will have cravings. If you like salty foods, sweet foods, greasy foods, chocolate, or other things, you will really want to eat these occasionally. Cravings happen a lot when you are eating less and may be a little hungry. What happens to many, is that they will reach a breaking point and give into the cravings, generally pigging out and wrecking the diet for the day. This, at times can compromise more than a few days’ efforts, so it should be avoided. Here are some strategies to beat these cravings.

One thing that you should do is keep some healthy food with you at all times. Many times, you might be driving in your car or passing a place that you enjoy eating at and will start to crave that food. It is amazing how donuts and french fries can actually call out your name while you are driving by. If you have something to eat, it can be a substitute. If not, you will more than likely go in and order the food you love and eat it. Or worse, pull into the drive through. You don’t even expend the energy to walk into the store by doing that.

Do not keep the wrong kind of food in your house if possible. If it is not there to snack on, you won’t be able to eat it. If it is not possible to get all the bad stuff out, put it all in one special place that is off limits to you. A designated shelf or cupboard works great for this. Have the foods in your home that you want to be eating, since that will be what you turn to when having hunger or cravings.

Find some distractions from food and cravings that are not food related. Turning to healthy food is one thing, but your mind is going to get to a point of being too focused on eating and food. Find a hobby or something that you can turn to which will take your mind off all of this. The secret is learning how to control your cravings so you naturally eat less and there are many sneaky yet effective ways you can do this.
